Greer whips West Florence 33-17 for State Title...... The Greer Yellow Jackets got to the State Finals with a pair of breathtaking finishes, beating both Greenville & Union in the final seconds. But they got two quick first quarter touchdowns to take a 14-0 lead, and never looked back. After a 3 & out stand by the defense, the Jacket offense moved it downfield in a hurry, and Sinclair Cannon took it in from 7 yards out. Will Smith added the extra point for a 7-0 lead. Then after another 3 & out, Arthur Sitton raced 62 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the second drive. And with the defense dominating, Greer would stretch the lead to 17, and then 24-0 after Will Smith kicked his first of four field goals, and a Cannon to Chad Cartwright TD pass, that coming after Mark Foster forced a fumble by Quentin Young on the kick return. The Knights would get on the board with under two minutes to go in the half after they recovered a fumble on a punt return at the Greer 9, as Young scored from a yard away. But Greer responded with a long kick return by Tyrone Williams, getting Greer in good enough field position for the offnese to mive down & get Will Smith another field goal before the half to make it 27-7. Another Smith kick on a time consuming drive to start the 3rd quarter made it 30-7, but West Florence got a field goal of their own, a 42 yarder. After swapping punts and another good defensive series, the Knights intercepted a pass & returned it 68 yards for a touchdown to make it 30-17. Greer would close out the scoring with a late field goal by Smith, making it 33-17 and giving Travis Perry a State Championship in his 3rd year as Head Coach. The Poinsett Grocery Player of the game was awarded to the whole Greer team & coaching staff. Great job guys! It had all the billings of a game that might just go down to the final seconds. Wow! It did just that as Union lined up at the Greer 4 1/2 yard line with 21 seconds to play, with Greer leading 21-17. Union QB Justin Knox had led his team from their own 15 over the final 5 minutes to that point. Three minutes earlier, Union was at the point of extinction, facing 4th and 22 from their own 22 yard line, but Knox hit CJ Lott with a 33 yard completion to keep the drive and season alive for Union. Union then moved the ball, mostly on the ground to the Greer three, where they would have first and goal as the clock moved under a minute to play. On first down Greer got Erish Stevens for a one yard loss, and then Union took their final timeout with 21 seconds left. As Union lined up, Greer called timeout. Then Knox dropped back to pass and lofted a short pass towards their big tight end Pip Smith, but Greer senior safety Josh Williams went up high to pull down the interception to save the victory for the Jackets. "I just tried to get into the right place on my coverage", said Williams on WPJM after the game. "I got there, and then jumped up as high as I could, and the ball stuck to my hands. I'm just so happy right now, we are going to the State Championship." After the pick, the Jackets were able to run out the clock. It was a great finish for the game, but it was also a great game throughout, as there was never more than a touchdown difference. Also, there were no turnovers in the game until the Williams interception. Greer opened "Jacket Bowl VII" with a sharp opening drive, capped off with a 27 yard Sinclair Cannon touchdown run just 58 seconds into the game. Will Smith added the PAT and Greer led 7-0. The two teams then swapped a pair of punts before Union would get things going. Knox scored with 7:52 remaining in the half, and Nick Maness kick his extra point and we were tied at 7-7. It didn't take long for Greer to regain the lead, because on 1st down from the 43 Cannon hit Tyrone Williams on a slant and Tyrone simply outran four Union defenders for a 57 yard score to make it 14-7 after Smith's kick. But Union would tie the game 3:04 before the half, as Stevens scored from the seven. It was the defenses that took over in the 3rd quarter, but Union would take their first lead with only 27 seconds remaining, as Maness hit a 27 yard field goal to stake Union to a 17-14 advantage heading into the final quarter. But Greer, again would respond, moving the ball to the Union 35. Then Cannon, who was 10-13 for 164 yards passing, scrambled in the pocket enough to see Chad Cartwright open at the five, hit him with a perfect pass and Chad came down with the touchdown catch. "I was moving around back there", said Sinclair, "and I saw Chad come open. I just had to get it to him and I knew he'd catch it & we'd score." Will Smith kicked the extra point, and it was 21-17, setting up the late game drama. It marks a second straight breathtaking finish for Greer, who edged top ranked Greenville 35-34 in overtime a week earlier. With the win, the Jackets improve to 12-2 on the year, while Union, the defending State 3A Champions, end their season at 10-4, in what might be Head Coach Mike Anthony's final game at Union. He has yet to decide if he will return next year. Greer will face the West Florence Knights at 8:00 at USC's Williams-Brice Stadium. West Florence reache the title game by defeating previously unbeaten Dillon 14-7. After the game, Greer Coach Travis Perry, who is now 32-9 in his 3rd season as Head Coach was grateful to get the win. "To God be the glory", he said after the game. "I am so thankful to be the Head Coach at Greer High. These kids have such incredible heart. They never give up. I am just so proud of all of them. I hope our fans will be there next week. I know they will....we have the greastest fans there are." Next week's kickoff is at 8:00. Hopefully, we'll have 20,000 or more Greer fans in the stands, but if you can't be there, we'll be on WPJM AM-800 with the BB&T Yellow Jacket Tailgate Show at 6:00 PM. Greer eedges Red Raiders 35-34 in O.T...... It is a game that will no doubt will be talked about for a generation. If you were looking for exciting, the fans who were there in what must have been the largest crowd ever at Greer's Dooley Field, the Greer Yellow Jackets and the Greenville Red Raiders didn't dissapoint. Four quarters of football didn't decide it. The battle of epic proportions went to overtime, with Greer emerging with the victory, a 35-34 triumph that sends the Jackets to yet another week of football, back once again to the Upstate Finals to face, who else, the Union Yellow Jackets. In a game that had more ups & downs, more ebb & flow than the average fan can handle, each team will have thoughts and stories about what might have been. Both teams made huge plays, & both teams missed critical chances at points. But in the end it was a simple kick that went wide right, as Greenville's missed extra point in overtime set off a wild celebration for Greer, and left the Greenville team paralyzed on the field for several minutes. As the big crowd settled in, the jackets came out smoking, putting together a nice opening drive to take a 7-0 lead, as Sinclair Cannon sneaked it in from a yard out with 6:48 to go in the 1st quarter. Will smith made the extra point. Greer would stop the Raiders and force a punt, but after punting it back to Greenville, Travail Jamison burst through the line for a 73 yard touchdown run to tie it up. They would then take the lead on their next posession with a one yard Jamison run. The drive was kept alive as a penalty on Greer as Greenville was punting game the Raiders a first down and they took advantage with the score. They would then extend the lead to 21-7, as Carlos Smith slipped out into the left flat, and QB Justin Sorrels hit him with an easy pass, that coming at the 2:48 mark before halftime. Greer would get a crucial score before the break though, as Cannon threw up a jump ball downfield, and Chad Cartwright went up high and over a Greenville defender to get the pass, and take it the last 15 yards to the end zone to make it 21-14. Greer missed a golden opportunity to tie it up just before halftime, as Greenville, forced to punt, had a low snap, and Greer got it at the Raider 10. But the half ended with the Cannon lying accross the goal line , with no touchdown signal. In the 3rd quarter, the Raiders extended the lead back to 14, as they scored on a 17 yard pass play from Sorrels to Jamison to make it 28-14, but then Greer came right back to 28-21 as Cannon capped a Greer drive with an 18 yard run. Greenville would later miss a 32 yard field goal early in the 4th quarter, and would later move deep into Greer territory with the game winding down under 4 minutes. But a first down sack, an incomplete pass & a short gain forced a punt, and Greer had it back, down 7 with three & a half minutes to play and at their own 27 yard line. Greer moved to the 37, and then it happend. It what is bound to be a play that will go down in history, Cannon hit Josh Williams with a short pass to the right side, who then lateralled the ball to Arthur Sitton. Sitton then jolted the stadium into a frenzy as he raced 63 yards for the touchdown. Will Smith tied it with the extra point at the 2:08 mark. It was a play called "twister", the old hook & lateral play, and the game was even at 28-28. Greenville, trying to get downfield before time expired would then fumble the ball the Greer 40. The Jackets ran the twister again to the other side, and after a personal foul call, had the ball in postion for a 31 yard Will Smith field goal with 15 seconds to play, but Corey Martin blocked it for the Raiders, sending the game to overtime. Greer would get the ball & score, as Cannon scrambled in from 8 yards out on 3rd down, and Smith once again nailed the PAT. The Raiders didn't take long to get their touchdown, as Sorrels tossed a pass on 1st down to an open Carlos Smith to make it 35-34. The wide right kick ended the game, and Greer once again will head to the Upstate Finals, once again against Union. Greenville, ranked #1 for most of the year, ends a remarkable season with a 12-1 record. The Jackets, who are now 11-2 face a Union team that is 10-3 after whipping Eastside 36-0. Greer Head Coach Travis Perry was proud of his team's effort. "Our kids believed all year long," Perry said. "We went down against Byrnes, and we fought back and had an opportunity to win, and we didn't. Same thing against Eastside. Tonight, our kids believed, and they kept battling, and I'm just so proud of them." Next week's kickoff is at 7:30. Greer takes out Lions, face showdown with Greenville next week..... Everyone knew it would be a tough, hard fought game. Not many were surprised that the Daniel Lions had the football, down by only a touchdown at 17-10, with under five minutes to play. But as the Greer crowd stood up and started to cheer on the defense, one could sense the energy that rose up. Cornelious Ballenger would be in on two straight tackles for loss, one assisted by Walter Booker, & then an incomplete pass forced Daniel to punt, from there the Jackets would score on a 68 yard drive, most of the running by Sinclair Cannon, to put the game away. Cannon went the final 11 yards to stretch the lead to 23-10. The game started well for Greer, who would look exceptional on the first drive. Most of the yards came in chunks, as the passing game looked sharp. But a holding penalty, then an interception, stopped the opening drive. Daniel would then march to the Greer 30, but on 4th down the Jacket defense would hold. Greer would finally get on the scoreboard with 8:26 to go in the half on a 15 yard Sinclair Cannon to Justin Miller pass play. Miller caught it just outside the goal line, and stretched it across. Will Smith's extra point made it 7-0 Jackets. Daniel then put together as fine a drive as you'll see, a 15 play 80 yard drive, that resulted with a 29 yard field goal to make it 7-3 with :23 to go before the half. After intermission, the Greer defense kept the Lions off the board the entire 3rd quarter, and the offense, despite a penalty that erased another Cannon to Miller touchdown from 35 yards, did get a 36 yard field goal at the 4:50 mark to make it 10-3. It only took 3 1/2 minutes to score again, as after another good defensive series, Tyrone Williams would catch a short pass from Cannon, and race half the field for the touchdown that put the Jackets up 17-3. Greer would take their next two posessions into the Lion 25, but a dropped pass and a fumble kept Daniel close. They drew even closer as they would drive 74 yards for a score, with Chris McIntosh running in from 8 yards to make it 17-10, setting up the late game heroics by Ballenger & Cannon. The Poinsett Grocery Player of the Game was Cornelious Ballenger, for his great defensive line play, and his leadership on defense. Congratulations to Cornelious! The Jackets will return to Dooley Field next Friday night to face the Greenville Red Raiders. Greenville enters the game at 12-0 and ranked #1 in the last 3A poll. They advance to meet Greer on the strength of their 51-27 win over Fairfield-Central. Greer improves to 10-2 with the win over the Lions, who end their season with a 9-3 record. On another playoff note: in the upper bracket, Eastide & Union both won over the two #1 seeds, York & B-HP. That sets up a huge game at Eastside next week that will face the Greer-Greenville winner. The Eastside & Union wins also means that the Greer-Greenville winner will host the Upstate Finals on November 28. Next week's kickoff is at 7:30. If you can't be there, we'll be on WPJM AM-800 with the BB&T Yellow Jacket Tailgate Show at 6:00. Better yet, be there with your headset on! "Saturday Morning Quarterback" column by The Greer Citizens' Joel Fitzpatrick....click! . Greer advances with 48-28 win over Wade Hampton, face Daniel next week..... Will Smith's 39 yard field goal for Greer cut into Wade Hampton's 14-7 lead with 7:52 to go before the half. Over the next sixteen minutes of clock, the Jackets would add 38 more points to that field goal, taking Greer from that seven point deficit to a 48-14 lead. Even with that offensive outburst, it was the defense that, perhaps, that provided the spark for the points explosion. After the field goal and the Generals with the ball at their 20, the Jackets got consecutive sacks on Wade Hampton QB Devin Campbell to pin them back at the three. On fourth down and a bobbled snap on the punt, the officials ruled that the punter had a knee down in the end zone as he scooped up the loose ball. That gave Greer a safety, and posession of the ball after a free kick. With the score now at 14-12, Greer would take the lead for good when Arthur Sitton scored from three yards out just 2:11 before halftime and a 19-14 lead. Then came the third quarter. After a nice return by Chad Cartwright, Greer would score quickly, as on the 3rd play of the half, Sinclair Cannon broke a 49 yard run for a TD to make it 26-14. He added a 17 yard scoring run at the 7:03 mark, and after a General fumble, recovered by Walter Booker at the 19, Cannon hit Chad Cartwrigt with a pass in the end zone on the next play that took the lead to 40-14. Finally, with all cylinders now clicking on offense, Walter Booker rumbled in from 11 yards out. Victor Irby ran in the two point conversion to make it 48-14. Wade Hampton would add two fourth quarter touchdowns, the last with just 37 seconds to play to take the final to 48-28. The game started off well enough for the Jackets, after an opening 3 & out performance by the defense, the offense quickly moved downfield, as Cannon would find Shun Foster near the goal line as the two hooked up for a 34 yard touchdown. But the Generals showed some of the flash that would lead them to a 7-0 record, as they would come back to score twice to take a 14-7 lead. The first score was a 3 yard Brock Putman run, and the second a 19 yard pass play from Campbell to Pat Cheetum. Greer improves to 9-2 on the season with the win, while Wade Hampton finishes a fine season with a 7-4 record. The Poinsett Grocery Player of the Game was Tyrone Williams, who played running back & wide reciever for the Jackets, but also was a key player in the secondary, as he guarded leading reciever Rashad Sullivan on the night. Sullivan came in the game with 48 receptions on the year, but with Williams defense, was very quiet until the game was out of reach. Congratulations to Tyrone! Now the Jackets face the very tough task of playing the Daniel Lions next week. After a rough start to the season, Daniel comes in playing as well as anyone in the state. They capatalized on six Clover turnovers in defeating the Eagles 63-27 in the first round tonight. Daniel is also 9-2 on the season, coming in as the #2 seed from the Western 3A conference. Daniel defeated Spartanburg ealier in the year at the Viking's Gibbs Stadium. They played Eastside to a very close game as well. Kickoff is at 7:30. If you can't be there, we'll be on WPJM AM-800 with the BB&T Yellow Jacket Tailgate Show at 6:00. Better yet, be there with your headset on! Jackets edge Red Devils 7-6 to wrap up Enoree River Conference title, host Wade Hampton next week..... Vince Lombardi once said "offense wins games, defense wins championships". On Halloween night at Dooley Field, Clinton held a Greer offense averaging 40.8 points per game to just 7 points. The Greer defense did the Red Devils one better. With the game, and the conference championship on the line, the defense made play after play, holding Clinton to just 32 second half yards. Not that the Greer offense was able to get much more than that, but they didn't need to, that is until it was 3rd & 10 from it's own 17 yard line. With just over four minutes to play in the game, clinging to a 7-6 lead Sinclair Cannon hit Chad Cartwright with a short pass that Cartwright turned into a 43 yard gain, more than doubling the 2nd half offensive output. That play enabled Greer to pin the Red Devils deep on their last drive. Forced to throw the ball, Greer was able to take over on downs & run out the clock, giving the Jackets the outright Enoree River Conference title, and a #1 seed into the playoffs, which start next week at Dooley Field. The game started well enough, with a nice blend of runs & passes moving Greer from their own 24 to the Clinton 25, but a holding penalty moved it way back. The Jackets would return to the 22, but on 4th down, Will Smith's 39 yard field goal would bounce off the left upright. Clinton would then embark on an 80 yard march for a touchdown, taking nearly eight minutes off the clock, as Chetyaune Reeder went in from three yards out. The extra point was no good to make it 6-0 Clinton with 10:58 to go in the half. After swapping punts with the Red Devils, Greer would then put together a 67 yard drive of thier own. When they got to the two, Cannon followed a Walter Booker block in for the score. Will Smith split the uprights for the extra point, making it 7-6 Jackets with only 1:55 to go before halftime. Little did we know at that time that the scoring was complete. Greer Head Coach Travis Perry, who notched his first conference championship as a Head Coach, said he expected a tough game. "We knew just what Clinton was going to do. They are one tough football team. Our team showed tonight they can be tough too. Our defense really shined tonight, especially in the 2nd half. I'm so proud & happy for our players, and our community. They deserve to have a championship team. Now we need to get back to work & get ready for the playoffs." The Poinsett Grocery Player of the Game tonight was Alfonzo Booker, who made several key defensive stops, including a 3rd down tackle that forced a Clinton punt from midfield in the 4th quarter. Congratulations to Alfonzo! Please come out Friday night to support the Jackets in the first round of the state 3A playoffs, as the Wade Hampton Generals. Kickoff is at 7:30. It had to happen soon. Greer broke through against Union tonight with an impressive 36-21 win over the defending State 3A Champions at Union County Stadium. And it didn't take but a few seconds for the Jackets to assert themselves. On the game's first play from scrimmage, Greer QB Sinclair Cannon streaked down the sidelines for a 65 yard touchdown run that put Greer up 7-0 after Will Smith's extra point. "That was huge", said Cannon after the game. "That play let us know right there that we could take it." Of course, Union didn't exactly pack it in. They would come back two series later and drive it 82 yards for a TD with an Erich Stevens run to tie it at seven. And that was the last scoring drive Union would get until the 4th quarter, as the Greer defense would then force seven straight Union punts. The Jackets would regain the lead early in the 2nd quarter, when Cannon hit Josh Williams with a pretty fade pass from 19 yards as Williams would haul in the high pass over his left shoulder for the score. That would make it 13-7 into the half. Union got the ball to start the 2nd half, but quickly had to punt after three downs, giving the Jackets the ball at the Union 41. Greer scored in seven plays, Cannon sneaking it in for a 19-7 lead. Then the Jackets broke the game open. Kendrick Lyles of Union was stripped of the ball on the kickoff return, and Mark Foster recovered at the Union 19. Arthur Sitton would then score from four yards out to make it 26-7. Greer's next touchdown was also a result of a Union turnover. Knox's pass deflected off reciever Tyrone Chick's hands and Mark Foster was there again for his season high 5th interception. Foster took it down to the 20, and on 3rd & 7, Cannon found Sitton all alone in the flat for an 18 yard hookup to make it 33-7. Union would respond, taking the next series 65 yards for a score, with Stevens getting most of the work. That made it 33-14, and after a successful onsides kick, Union would score again to cut the lead to 33-21. Greer however, would recover the next onsides attempt, and the Jackets would then put the game away, mounting a time consuming 52 yard drive, resulting in a 29 yard Will Smith field goal, pushing the final score to 36-21. The Poinsett Grocery Player of the game went to Greer Head Coach Travis Perry, who would get his first win over Union. The staff, as usual, did an excellent job in preparation and during the game tonight. Congratulations to Coach Perry! Jackets take out Broome in 41-6 road win.... Jackets pull away from tough Broome team....Union up next.... It really was much harder than the score sounds. Ask Arthur Sitton. Coming into the game as the 7th leading rusher in the Upstate, the Broome defense, with a relentless blitzing scheme, held Sitton to just four yards on nine carries. Still, the Jackets found enough that they could do to gradually pull away for a 41-6 win Friday night at Broome. Sinclair Cannon had 185 yards rushing and 197 through the air. He ran for three TD's and threw for two more, and word has it that he may have driven the bus back home after the game. When Broome's strategy was evident, Greer would use screens and sweeps to evade the rush. And with Broome bringing the safeties, that opened up the middle of the field as well. And even though the Greer defense would finally give up it's first offensive points in nine quarters, still held the Centurians to just 34 rushing yards on 32 carries. After swapping punts with Broome, the Jackets would bust a big play, as they ran the perfect play as Broome blitzed, a swing pass that Arthur Sitton took 46 yards for a touchdown. Will Smith's extra point made it 7-0 midway through the 1st period. The Jackets would score again four minutes later, as Cannon took it through the tackles 62 yards to make it 14-0. Broome would take the upper hand over the next 10 minutes, getting a long pass play that set up a 36 yard field goal by Carter Ridgeway. Ridgeway would miss from that same distance a couple minutes later, but would connect from 34 yards out to make it 14-6 5:09 before intermission. Greer had fumbled at it's own 9 yard line, but the defense got two big tackles for loss, to make the Centurians settle for three. After a sub par possesion and punt, Greer would get a big break with 22 seconds to go in the half, as Broome fumbled at their own 29. After a loss of a yard & a time out, Cannon lofted a pass to the back of the end zone that Chad Cartwright would go up high to bring down to give Greer a 21-6 halftime lead. "That was huge", said Greer Head Coach Travis Perry of the turn of events before the break. "We had struggled some there in the 2nd quarter, and our defense gets the turnover, and Chad & Sinclair hooked up on a big play for us." In the 2nd half, with both teams finding yards hard to come by, Gree would start inside their own one yard line. After a nine yard pickup for a first down on third down, Cannon would strike again, this time going 86 yards through a huge hole opened by the offensive line to give Greer a 99+ yard TD drive. Greer's final two scores were set up once again by the defense, as Josh Williams picked off a Broome pass, giving good field position, and Cannon once again scored, this one from 7 yards away. Finally, the Jackets would get a 13 yard touchdown run from Tyrone Williams, after Randon Lewis recovered a Centurian fumble at the 27. Greer maintains sole possesion of first place in the Enoree River Conference going in to the game this week against Union. Union got a 41-6 win over Riverside tonight as well, to stay in a 2nd place tie with Clinton, who knocked off Newberry 28-10 in the other conference game. Greer takes care of business in 45-7 win over Warriors.... . Jackets defeat rival Riverside on Homecoming.... It was a game that, by all pregame forecasts, that the Greer Yellow Jackets would win. And tonight the Greer Yellow Jackets won. Riverside came in with everything to gain and through one quarter, found themselves very much in the game at 10-7, much in part to Dustin Gourdin's 95 yard interception return, and another Greer turnover deep in Warrior territory. The Riverside score seemed to wake up the Jackets, who would then add 35 unanswered points en route to a 45-7 Homecoming victory at Dooley Field Friday night. Greer opened the game as they did the previous week at Newberry, taking the opening kick and marching down the field. The drive slowed at the Warrior 13, but Will Smith took up where he left of last week, drilling a 30 yard field goal to make it 3-0. Greer would go up 10-0 after recovering a Riverside fumble inside the 20, when Arthur Sitton took it in three plays later from five yards out. Greer's Tyrone Williams... Poised to score again, Greer would drive deep again, but Gourdin's interception & return put the Warriors back in the game at 10-7. The Jackets would then get three first half touchdowns, the first a Tyrone Williams 16 yard burst through the middle, then another Arthur Sitton score, this one from 3 yards. That Greer touchdown was set up by a 57 yard hookup between quarterback Sinclair Cannon and WR Chad Cartwright. And with the score at 23-7, Randon Lewis intercepted a Riverside pass and returned it 56 yards for a score. The two point conversion pass was good from Cannon to Tyrone Williams to make it 31-7 at halftime. After the extended halftime and the Homecoming festivities, the rain began to fall and a pesky wind swirled about, Greer would add two more TD's. Senior Walter Booker would score from 2 yards out in the 3rd, and Sinclair Cannon would take it in from six yards early in the 4th quarter. The defense had another outstanding game for the Jackets, limiting Riverside to just 58 yards of offense and no offensive points to follow up on the shutout at Newberry last week. The win gives the Jackets sole posession of 1st place in the Enoree River Conference with a 2-0 record. Newberry shocked Union and Clinton whipped Broome in the other conference games, giving Clinton, Broome, Newberry, and Union each one loss, while Riverside drops to 0-2 in the league. With their title hopes now in their control, the Jackets head to Broome next week to take on a 5-2 Centurian team. Coach Travis Perry was pleased with the win, noting that "it was great to see the defense get a second straight shutout. Those guys have come a long way in just two weeks." He was especially happy to see the good production from both Arthur Sitton and Tyrone Williams at running back. "We are blessed to have two good running backs and it was good to see both of those guys with big games. In fact, we're blessed to also have two good quarterbacks too. We have some really fine atheletes who are committed to our team and our success, and I'm always happy when we can get everyone into the game like we did tonight." Sitton rushed for 140 yards on 21 attempts and Williams had 91 yards on 13 carries. Sinclair Cannon added 82 yards rushing, that in spite of the Riverside defense keying on the Greer quarterback. Cannon was good through the air, connecting on 8 of 13 passes for 147 yards. Greer improves to 5-2 overall, and again, 2-0 in the Enoree River Conference. Tyrone Williams was named the Poinsett Grocery Player of the Game for his great performance. On defense Randon Lewis was noted on the air for a good game. Congratulations to Tyrone! Congratulations as well to Summer Oyervides for being named the 2003 Greer High Homecoming Queen! The Greer Yellow Jackets needed a good game for a lot of reasons. They needed to bounce back. They needed to gain some confidence. They needed to start the conference slate on a positive note. They got all three & more with a solid 24-0 road win over previously once-beaten Newberry. Newberry, which came into the game averaging 38 points per game, was held to no points and just 108 yards in offense. It was by far the most imposing numbers for the Greer defense this season, and it came during a week that toughness & tackling skills was the topic among armchair coaches around town. Newberry only twice even made it into Greer territory, both times being snuffed on 4th down tries. Greer took the opening kickoff & marched dwon the field, led by a 65 yard pass from Sinclair Cannon to Chad Cartwright. They would move to the 6 yard line, where Will Smith would boot a 23 yard field goal to make it 3-0 Jackets. The score would remain 3-0 until late in the 2nd quarter when Smith would add his 2nd field goal, this one from 31 yards. Smith then blasted his kickoff into the end zone, giving the Bulldogs the ball at the 20. With all three timeouts, the Jacket defense stopped Newberry for three & out, and Greer started again in Bulldog territory with time remaning. Utilizing the short passing game, the Jackets moved to the 7, when Cannon rifled a pass to Cartwright for the touchdown with 20 seconds remaining. Cannon then hit Justin Miller inside the right pylon for the two point conversion to make it 14-0 at the half. After halftime, the Jackets did commit two turnovers on their first two posessions of the half, a fumble at midfield, and an interception at the Newberry 30, but then they settled back down, and with 4 minutes to go in the quarter, Cannon reeled off a 23 yard run for the score to make it 21-0. Then, after another good defensive stand, Will Smith got his third field goal of the night from 33 yards to get the score to 24-0. Coach Travis Perry was very pleased with his team's performance. "This past week was a tough week for our kids & our coaches. I'm very proud of the way the came back after the loss. The defense made a complete turnaround. Will Smith was huge tonight with the kicking game. He made a big difference in the game." The Poinsett Grocery Player of the game was Will Smith. He had the three field goals, one PAT, 4 punts for a 38 yard average, and kicked 3 of 5 kickoffs into the end zone. Congratulations to Will! Next week Greer returns to Dooley Field to take on the Riverside Warriors. It's Homecoming, so we hope you'll be able to join us in supporting the Jackets in the stands. Yes, the Eagles came in 4-0 and ranked 5th in the state, but many still thought they were the underdog in their game against the Greer Yellow Jackets. But the Eagles went toe to toe with Greenville County's top program and, on this night, dominated, winning by the score of 31-19, giving Head Coach John Carlisle the all time Greenville County record for wins as a coach. The game started out as a defensive struggle, with the teams swapping a pair of punts, and on Greer's third posession the Eagles stripped the ball from Arthur Sitton at the Jacket 30. A play later Eastside QB Chris Stone took an option keeper 29 yards for the score for a 7-0 lead after Matt Harmon's extra point. The score would stay that way until late in the first half when the Eagles would put up two quick touchdowns. First Stone split two Greer defenders with a perfect pass, hitting Keiron Williams with a 37 yard pass to make it 14-0 at the 4 minute mark, then after forcing a Greer punt, the got it back with just 43 seconds in the half. Josh Durham, who would rush for over 200 yards, ripped a 62 yarder that ended the half & a 21-0 Eastside lead. Greer tried to rally after intermission. The defense quicky forced Eastside to punt, and two long plays took the ball inside the Eagle 15, but a fumble there ended that drive, but after another punt, Greer would get on the board and gain momentum with a touchdown drive, capped by a 6 yard Sinclair Cannon run. Will Smith's extra point would make it 21-7. At that point, the Jackets seemed poised to make a run at it. Josh Durham had his own ideas however, as he ran it 76 yards a play later for a TD, giving the Eagles back their 21 point lead. Matt Harmon would tack on a 26 yard field goal to make it 31-7. And even though the game was out of reach, Greer would put up two fourth quarter scores. Sinclair Cannon lashed out with and 80 yard run after the field goal, getting to the corner and outrunning three Eastside defenders to the goal line. Then on the last play of the game, Cannon hit Justin Miller with a 7 yard scoring pass in the back corner of the end zone. Coach Travis Perry was baffled at his team's play, but promised improvement as conference play begins next week at Newberry. "We did not play well tonight. Hats off to Eastside for the way they played, and congratulations to Coach Carlisle on the record. We'll get back out there on Monday, and I can assure you, we'll get ourselves ready to play Newberry next week." The Poinsett Grocery Player of the Game was Justin Miller, who made four catches, two for first downs on 3rd & 4th downs, and he also had the touchdown catch. Congratulations to Justin. The game next week will be at Newberry. We hope you'll make the trip to show support for the Jackets. What a great standing room only crowd we had at Eastide, probably as much or more than the home team had there. (Up early next week) Fast start propels Jackets over Berea... Defense gets two early turnovers that Greer converts to 14 quick points in 41-8 win over Bulldogs..... Maybe it is a trend. If so, expect every football coach in America to be calling Greer Head Coach Travis Perry to find out the secret. For two straight games, the Greer defense has forced turnovers in the first five snaps. Both led to touchdowns, as the Greer Yellow Jackets improved to 3-1 with a 41-8 win over the Berea Bulldogs. On the opening series, Greer's Chad Martin recovered a fumble at the Berea 30. Three plays later, quarterback Sinclair Cannon found Tyrone Williams for an 11 yard touchdown. Will Smith added the PAT for a 7-0 lead. Just a couple of plays later, safety Mark Foster got his second interception in as many games, giving Cannon & the offense great field position once again as they would move the ball to the Berea 19. Cannon ran it in from there to make it 14-0 less than 3 minutes into the game, and after a short punt by the Bulldogs once again gave Greer good starting position, Arthur Sitton would race it in from 23 yards out for a 21-0 lead, still in the first quarter. As the second stanza began, Sitton would score again, this time from four yards. That made it 27-0. The last score af the half would come after another defensive stop gave the Jackets the ball at midfield with 1:51 on the clock. At the :41 mark, Sitton took it in from 2 yards out, and the two point conversion run by Cannon made it 35-0 at halftime. In the second half, Greer got more conservative, keeping it mainly on the ground and short passes, and they drove to an early score, as Cannon would bolt around the left side and streak 51 yards for a TD. That made it 41-0. The defense was able to prevent a first down by Berea until the late in the third quarter, the Bulldogs 10th posession of the game. From there, however the 'Dogs would show some spark, getting a few nice plays. Still, the Greer defense was able to keep them away from the end zone. Ironicly, it was the Berea defense that finally got them on the board, when a fumbled exchange was picked up by A. J. Edwards and returned 57 yards for a touchdown. The two point conversion was good, making the final score Greer 41 Berea 8. Mark Foster was named the Poinsett Grocery Player of the Game, as his second interception of the season helped the fast start, and he had several tackles for the much improved Greer defense. The 3-1 Jackets go back on the road next week to take on 4-0 Eastside, 41-7 winners over Riverside. Berea drops to 1-3 and will host Southside next week. We hope you'll be there at Eastside, in what is shaping up to be the one of next week's biggest games in the Upstate. What do Walter Booker, Shun Foster, Arthur Sitton, Josh WIlliams, Sinclair Cannon, Tyrone Williams, Chad Cartwright, and Will Smith have in common? They all are in the scoring column against the Chesnee Eagles in Greer's 63-12 win Friday night against the Eagles. Greer got back on the winning side tonight after last weeks tough loss to Byrnes. As big as the offenseive numbers were, it was the defense that propelled the Jackets into their first 14 points. Just two plays into the game, Tyrone Williams intercepted an Eagle pass at the 28 yard line, and two plays later Walter Booker ran it in from 7 yards out. Will Smith's extra point, his first in a 9 for 9 night, made it 7-0. On the next Chesnee series, Mark Foster picked a Chesnee pass at midfield and returned it to the 25, setting up an 18 yard pass play from Sinclair Cannon to Shun Foster to make it 14-0. As the defense continued keeping the Eagles in check, Arthur Sitton tore off an 85 yard run to make it 21-0. On the next drive, Cannon found Josh Williams at the 5, and he made two defenders miss for an 18 yard TD. Chesnee then got on the board with a kick return to the Greer 39, and a personal foul penalty to the 24. Curtis McDowell then scored from 6 yards out and it was 24-6. Greer then ran the remaining 4 minutes off the clock in the half, with Cannon running it in from 4 yards out capping a 75 yard drive to end the half with a 35-6 lead. In the 2nd half, Greer opened with a 65 yard drive, with Cannon again doing the honors, this time on a 13 yard run on 4th down. That made it 42-6, before Thomas Leith got a TD for the Eagles on a 10 yard pass from Eric Goode to make it 42-12. Tyrone Williams then scored from 2 yards on a pass from Cannon, and, after forcing a Chesnee punt, Chad Cartwright got his third TD of the season with a 90 yard punt return, probably the highlight reel play of the night. That made it 56-12, and freshman Bralen Barton got the evenings last score on a 1 yard run to get it to the 63-12 final score. Coach Travis Perry was pleased with most of the outing, but voiced concern over special teams kick coverage, and some uncharacteristic holes in the Greer defense. "Those are two main things we will work on this week in practice, starting on Monday. We must get better in those two areas to compete in our region. We had some players make some good plays tonight on offense, and we made some progress tonight there." The Poinsett Grocery Player of the Game was Randon Lewis, who, had an excellent all round game on defense with 9 tackles, two for loss. (Up early next week) Week #4 foe Berea 14 Travelers Rest 7 . Rebels stake early 28-0 lead, withstand furious Greer rallies to win 42-29......... Last year Byrnes jumped out to a 21-0 lead before Greer rallied to make it a close game. In the end, the Rebels won it by 13. Sound familiar? Tonight at Dooley Field, Greer once again spotted the #2 ranked Rebels a 21-0 lead, saw it grow to 28-0, and then 34-7, then put together a furious rally. The Jackets got the lead down to 34-21 and had it first and ten at the Byrnes 15 with 8 minutes to play, but a turnover converted into a Byrnes touchdown, helped the Rebels to a 42-29 win. Greer started the night on offense, but were forced to punt on their first possesion. Byrnes quickly scored on a 62 yard pass play from Trey Elder to Jomar Wright just three minutes into the game. They would score again three minutes later as Elder hit tight end Dexter Young with a seven yard TD pass on third and goal. Meanwhile, the Greer offense was having a hard time getting in gear. Byrnes scored again on the first play of the 2nd quarter on a 14 yard run, and a 2 yard run by Rodricuz Williams two yard run at the 4:47 mark gave the Rebels a 28-0 lead. That's when Greer Coach Travis Perry inserted Sinclair Cannon at quarterback. Cannon engineered an 80 yard drive with several swirving runs, and found paydirt through the air, as Chad Cartwright went way up high to haul in the pass at the goal line as Greer would trail 28-7 at the half. The momentum that Greer had gained quickly was doused however, as Byrnes came out and went 65 yards in just 41 seconds off the clock. The extra point was missed and it was 34-7. That's when the rally began. Arthur Sitton, who gained 237 yards last week on the ground, went 25 yards for a TD, then Cannon would sneak it in from a yard out to draw Greer to 34-21 on the last play of the third quarter. With the Jacket defense getting inspired, and the huge crowd roaring, Elder, facing heavy pressure was picked off by Shun Foster, giving Greer the ball at the Rebels 44 yard line. Cannon quickly moved them to the Byrnes 15, but on 1st down, Cannons pass to Sitton was behind him and ruled a lateral. The ensuing scramble for the ball resulted in a Byrnes first down back at the 44. Two plays later, they had scored again, with Elder breaking out of a mess at midfield and taking it the distance. That made it 42-21 with six minutes to go. But the no-quit Jackets wouldn't go away, as they marched again. On fourth and one at the Rebel 15, Cannon somehow got away from three would be tacklers and scored to again get within 13. Greer then executed a perfect onsides kick, and promptly moved it downfield again to the 25. But with 4 minutes to play, Cannon's pass was intercepted at the 10, and Byrnes was able to run out the clock for a 42-29 win. Greer Head Coach Travis Perry was pleased with the comebacks, pleased with the effort, but not pleased with his team's overall performance. "We are a much better football team than that. We will get back to practice on Monday and we will work ourselves very hard to be an improved football team by next Friday night when we go to Chesnee." He had praise for Byrnes. "They came in here and played well. Bobby (Bentley) is an exceptional football coach, and they did what they had to do, and they beat us. This game will help us as we move ahead to other big games." The Poinsett Grocery Player of the Game for Greer was Sinclair Cannon. He rushed 17 times for 134 yards, and was 12-28 passing for 164 yards and a touchdown. The Jackets had 413 yards of offense on the night. Next week Greer goes on the road for the first time, as they travel to Chesnee. Please come over to the game, and remember to bring your headset. They expected to get off to a good start tonight. Nothing has changed about those two perspectives now that the game has come & gone, as Greer dominated the Devildogs in the season opener 69-0. Junior tailback Arthur Sitton rushed nine times for 237 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Jackets, but he wassn't all, by far. Tyrone Williams got the home team on the board early ripping off a 61 yard touchdown run off a little dump pass on the corner, then taking it the distance. Will Smith, who would make nine of ten extra point kicks, split the uprights to make it 7-0. Sitton then scored from 80 yards on the first play after a missed T.R. field goal, and scored again four minutes later on a 56 yard run. In fact, at one point he had 156 yards rushing on just three carries. As the defense contined to bend a little, but still manage to keep T.R. off the scoreboard, Sinclair Cannon tore around the right side as he motioned that way, then cut accross the grain for a 47 yard score. The final points of the first half came when quarterback Josh Williams scored on a 10 yard run on an option play, and Greer led 34-0 at the half. After intermission, Sitton would score two more touchdowns, from 3 and 32 yards, as it was 48-0 to start the 4th quarter. The defense put two touchdowns on the scoreboard, sandwiched around a 15 yard touchdown pass from Sinclair Cannon to Justin Miller.
