Jackets end season against hot Berea team....

Sergio Gilliam in his last game in a great career as a Greer Yellow Jacket...

Bulldogs defeat Jackets 82-568 after tight first quarter.....

The Greer Yellow Jackets ended their season tonight at Berea with an 82-58 loss to the Bulldogs, who have now won 16 consecutive games. Berea, now 21-1 on the season had an early battle on their hands, getting some breathing room as the first quarter ran out, holding a 24-18 lead. But the Bulldogs went on a second quarter run to go up by sixteen at the half. They continued to build their lead, to win going away in front of a roaring home crowd.
Chad Cartwright and Josh Higgins, both of whom will return nest year, led the Jackets in scoring with 13 & 12 points, while Greer great Sergio Gilliam ended his career as a Greer Yellow Jacket with eight points. Coach Jeff Neely was dissapointed with the team's performance, but proud of his team's late season run to qualify for the playoffs, and for their effort all season long. "We practiced great all week. We looked scary-good in practice yesterday. This was a tough environment to play in. These guys were fun to coach. Even when we were without a conference win and struggling, they came to practice and worked hard every single day. I am glad their effort at least paid off with making the playoffs. I am thankful to the seniors, all of them, for being so dedicated. Hopefully, we can take another step forward next year."
Thanks to Coach Neely, Coach Reid, Coach Brown, and all the guys for a fun season. As Coach Neely said early on, "I don't know how many games we'll win, but we'll be exciting to watch." Well they were. And thanks to all the Jacket fans for their support as well for the 2002-3 season. RG

Greer Girls fall from playoffs in heartbreaking loss to Lions....
Guys begin playoff run Friday at Berea.....

The Greer High girls began their journey into the 3-A State playoffs as Enoree River Conference Champions, a gaudy 19-4 record, including 9-1 in the conference, the #1 seed, and the promise of at least three home games if they kept on winning. And at halftime, the Lady Jackets had played just as impressive as they have all season, sprinting to a 37-28 lead. But the visiting Lions cut into that lead, trailing by only four heading into the fourth quarter. Then Daniel showed the form that started their season with a 10-0 record. They outscored Greer 24-12 in the final stanza to take a 70-62 win, stunning the crowd and the Greer team at Phillips Arena. It was like they had just seen something happen, but it didn't register. Tiffany Jones, Jessica McGlothen, and Courtney Hawkins, leading scorers all season, again led the Jackets in double figures. The Lady Jackets finish the season with a 19-5 overall record, and champions of the Enoree River Conference. They return all five starters for next season.

Friday night the guys travel to face the Berea Bulldogs in the first round. Berea, 20-1 on the year, is riding a 15 game win streak, which includes a 14 point win over Jeff Neely's Jackets. As we have pointed out, however, that was before football players Sergio Gilliam (16.5 ppg in his last 6 games), Shun Foster (11 ppg/ 8 boards in the last four) and Sinclair Cannon had settled into basketball. Greer enters the game with nothing to lose, and with high expectations.
Best of luck to the guys at Berea, and even with the loss tonight, thanks to the Greer girls for one of the best girls seasons ever!!

Jackets gain another split at Clinton Friday....
.
Girls get road win, guys fall.....both teams make State 3-A playoffs!!
     .
The Greer High guys and girls basketball teams finished up the regular season Friday night at Clinton with the girls pounding the Red Devils, while the guys led Clinton through the first quarter, but couldn't finish it out. The girls won 54-34, while the guys score was 85-69.
In the girls game, the Jackets led by only three at the end of the first quarter, but outscored Clinton 14-3 in the second, and further extended the lead in the second half. The Lady Jackets improved to 19-4 for the season, and finished 9-1 in the Enoree River Conference. Lindsey Neal, Courtney Hawkins, and Tiffany Jones were in double figures, while Jessica McGlothen just missed with 9.
They open the playoffs at home on Thursday at 7:00 at Greer's Phillips Arena. The probable opponent is Daniel from the Western 3-A Conference.
In the guys game Sergio Gilliam led with 20 points, while Shun Foster and Chad Cartwright had 15 & 12. After leading by two with a 24 point first quarter, the Jackets cooled in the 2nd & 3rd, with only 9 & 14 points. Clinton, who won the league title with the home win, had four players in double figures. Greer had played Clinton to a very tight game earlier this year at Phillips Arena. The Jackets secured a fourth place finish in the conference.
The Greer High guys will travel to Berea on Friday to face the Bulldogs. The two faced each other in the Greer/Pepsi Christmas Classic, with Berea winning that game by 14. Greer had just gotten football players Sergio Gilliam, Shun Foster, and Sinclair Cannon with the team in that one, so it could be an entirely different game. The last time these two met in the playoffs, you may remember was the Upstate Championship game in 1995, when Greer came back from 7 points down in the final 30 seconds to defeat the Bulldogs in overtime, and advance to the State finals.
Congratulations to Coach Neely, Coach Greene, and the entire staffs and players of the guys & girls teams for making the playoffs. Let's show them out appreciation with some great crowds!!

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!!

Girls whip Union, clinch Enoree River Conference Championship!!

Guys win streak stopped at three, still have shot at playoffs...

The Greer High girls are now officially the champions of the Enoree River Conference. Shaking off an inspired first quarter by Union, who only trailed by three points, the Lady Jackets fired their booster rockets, and outscored Union by 40 points the rest of the way, as Coach Carlton Greene was able to empty his bench. Lindsey Neal scored 14 to lead the Jackets, and Tip Jones had 11. Louise Alexander scored 10 points in her final regular season game as a Greer Yellow Jacket. The Lady Jackets close out the regular season with a trip to Clinton on Friday. Clinton surely caught the Jackets attention tonight, as they defeated Riverside. The conference championship also means that the Lady Jackets will open the state 3-A playoffs at home.
CONGRATULATIONS to Coach Greene, Coach Clement, and the Lady Yellow Jackets!!

Here is a link to the 3-A State playoff bracket. The Greer girls will open at Louis Phillips Arena on Feb. 20 against the Region 1 fourth place team. Game time will be 7:00.
     State 3-A girls playoff bracket........

.
In the guys game, Union started strong, and Greer was never able to put together a big run to run them down. Josh Higgins had a nice game for the Jackets with 19 points. Sergio Gilliam had 13 for Greer. Union was led by USC football signee Curtis Rice with 17. They had four players in double figures.
Greer travels to Clinton Friday night to face the Red Devils in the final regular season game. Either a Greer win, or a Broome loss on Friday will put the Jackets in the playoffs.
Greer Head Coach Jeff Neely said playing three games in five nights was "tough", but he remained upbeat. "Three games in five days proved to be too much, especially with a team with good atheletes like Union. It is hard to prepare for someone without a formal practice in which to do it. They played hard, the shots just would not fall. We had very little to give tonight. Our shooting was not good. We were 0-10 from the line the first half. We played without Shun Foster, who was sick. Good news, we know we can play with them and play at that level. Other good news for us was Broome lost as well, which means we are still in 4th place by ourselves.
I think we need to get the radio crew to cover our games more often. We are perfect when they broadcast our games. Can we get them to go with us to Clinton ??????? Someone please sponsor them, and I will buy supper!
We are very proud of our Seniors that were recognized tonight. Sergio, Jermaine, Ish, Louise, and Kristine. Thanks so much to all 5 of you for making Greer a very special place to coach. Thanks so much to the Booster Club for honoring them."
      Let's go to Clinton!!

Jackets stun Warriors with Monday night sweep!
.
Guys win third straight in 73-67 over Riverside Greer ladies can clinch Enoree River championship with home win against Union on Tuesday...

Two and a half weeks ago the Greer guys lost a tough one at home against Clinton, then the next night, half still reeling from the loss, they never got things going at Union, and two nights later led Newberry the whole game. only to drop another close contest. That was two and a half weeks ago. Now the Jackets have put together a three game winning streak and are riding high looking very much like a playoff team. A win against that same Union team can clinch that Tuesday night.
In the game tonight, broadcast on WPJM and the Yellow Jacket Sports Network, the Jackets stormed back from nine points down in the third quarter to once again defeat the Riverside Warriors, this time by the score of 73-67. Chad Cartwright, Sergio Gilliam, and Josh Higgins were all in double figures, and strong performances by Sinclair Cannon and Ismail Lateef on defense spurred on the Jackets, as their bid for postseason has gone from hope to a very real possibility. The Jackets need at least one win in the last two games, or for Broome to lose their remaing two games. Greer Coach Jeff Neely prefers the proactive approach. "We would love to go into the playoffs with a five game winning streak. That's our plan, anyway. Union has a great team. We are excited to see them coming here tomorow night. Our guys just play so hard. We went to a zone in the third quarter. The guys cam into the huddle and said, we gotta get out of that zone, Coach, so we did. They started making plays. They were great." That they were.
Greer quickly erased that nine point lead, and went up by five, with steals, fast breaks and threes. WIth Greer up by three, and Riverside's James Dowell seemingly open for a game tying 3 pointer, Sinclair Cannon came from nowhere to block the shot, gather the ball, and find Chad Cartwright open for the break the other way. Riverside never got closer than three the rest of the way. Pierre Jones had a great night for the Warriors with 28 points. It was another dissapointing night for Riverside, as they have lost several close games this season, and they themselves could be looking at postseason if things had bounced a different way. Greer closes out the conference season with Union at Phillips Arena Tuesday, and at Clinton on Friday. The Jacket guys are now 2-0 in games this year on the Yellow Jacket Sports Network. Great going Jackets!!
In the girls game, the Lady Jackets put on a display of great defense, and sharp shooting by Jessica McGlothen to gain revenge to the team that broke their eight game winning streak last Tuesday. They lead 8-0 to start the game, then quickly built a 15 pint lead before halftime. McGlothens four three pointers in the first half spurred the Jackets. The Ladies also employed a tenacious box and one defense, with Courtney Hawkins on Riverside's Lisa Jackson, who burned the Greer girls last week. The pressure took the 16 points per game Jackson out of her game, and no one else filled the void.
Courtney, Jessica, Tiffany Jones, and Shannon Spurgeon joined Head Coach Carlton Greene at halftime of the boys game on the Yellow Jacket Sports Network. Very refreshing to see a team that really seems to like each other, pull for each other, and get along so well. "We know we have much more work to do, said Hawkins, a freshman, "but we are having fun, we want to do it." Greene was pleased as well. "God has blessed us. The girls have worked very hard, and done things right. I thank Him for putting me and this team in this position."
The Lady Jackets are now 7-1 in the Enoree River Conference, 18-4 overall, and two more wins, home against Union, and at Clinton will clinch the Enoree River crown. Jones knows not to take that for granted. "We want to get two more. Those teams will play very hard."
Exciting basketball, and more is on the way. Come out and see it for yourself at Phillips Arena Tuesday night!!

Greer girls grab share of Enoree River lead.....guys leap into postseason position as Jackets sweep Centurians!
.
Sole posession of first place at stake Monday night as Riverside girls come to the Hive....Guys right back in the hunt for playoff spot after win

The Greer High girls bounced back in a big way Friday night at Phillips Arena with a 64-39 win over first place Broome. With Riverside's win over Union, the two will tangle Monday night for first place all alone. Greer & Riverside have met twice this year, with both teams winning once. Riverside won this past Tuesday at Riverside. Tonight, Greer had an 8 point halftime lead, and then blew it open with a 41 point second half. Four players hit double figures, paced by Lindsay Neal's season high 17 points. Courtney Hawkins and Tip Jones had 15 each, while Jessica McGlothen had 12. The Lady Jackets are now 17-4, and 6-1 in the Enoree River Conference.
In the guys game, the Jackets shook off a rough start with a 51-48 win over the Broome Centurians. The fourth quarter began with the teams tied at 37. But Greer pulled it out, and have now won back to back games, getting themselves squarely back into the playoff picture. They can remain ahead of Riverside in the conference race with a win on Monday night as the Warriors visit. Greer & Broome are now tied, but with a win on Monday, will also move a game ahead of the Centurians. Sergio Gilliam led Greer with 16 points, including four three pointers, while Josh Higgins and Shun Foster had 13 & 11 points, respectively. Another positive note, the Jackets leading scorer Chad Cartwright, who came in averaging almost 16 per game, was held to just 5 points, but the Jackets still responded with a good team effort to get the win.
So.....like big games?? Monday night you can see two of the biggest of the season, and they just happen to be against the biggest rivals, as the Riverside Warriors come to Greer's Phillips Arena. Game one at 6:00 will be for first place, and game two is most likely for a playoff berth. So come to the Hive on Big Monday to root on the Greer Yellow Jackets!!

Guys win huge one at Riverside, girls streak snapped at nine
Greer teams have three big games in five nights starting Friday at home against Broome....

The Greer Yellow Jacket guys got their first conference win Tuesday night in dramatic fashion at Riverside with a 90-79 victory. Trailing 73-70 with just over two minutes remaining, Coach Neely went to a three guard lineup. What ensued was a 16-1 Greer run to take a 86-74 lead. Sergio Gilliam led the charge, as he netted a career high 25 points, the night before he was to sign a football scholarship to Clemson. Sergio wasn't alone, as Sinclair Cannon, Chad Cartwright, and Josh Higgins each hit double figures, while Shun Foster had eight points, including two monster dunks in the big run. The win puts the Jackets back in playoff contention with a big game Friday at Phillips Arena against Broome.
In the girls game, the Lady Jackets long win streak was stopped, as the Lady Warriors jumped out to a 13-1 lead, and coasted the rest of the way. Greer did rally in the fourth quarter, and a Jessica McGlothen three pointer cut it to a nine point lead with just under five minutes to play, and had posession of the ball again, but a defensive stop, and two quick baskets by Riverside took the game back out of reach. Greer, Riverside, and Broome are now in a three way tie for first in the Enoree River Conference. The Jackets have them both at home right away, with Broome visiting Friday, and Riverside on Monday. Come see it!!
