The Jackets have now won five straight and sit at 5-2 and more importantly 2-0 in the Peach Blossom Conference. Dre Williams rushed for a game high 171 yards, including an 89 yarder that gave Greer their first lead. Quay White also had a big game, returning the 2nd half kickoff 93 yards for a TD, then icing the game with a 64 yard scamper as Eastside was trying to put together a comeback. Greer will step out of region play next week at Greenville as the two old rivals meet at Sirrine Stadium. The Red Raiders are also 5-2 after a high scoring close loss tonight at Wren. Greer sits at the top of the region 1/2 game ahead of Union County, who is 1-0, while Blue Ridge is 1-1 and Eastside and Travelers Rest are 0-2. Yellow Jackets roll past Travelers Rest on Homecoming, 55-21 Yellow Jackets battle against all odds in wild win at Woodruff, 24-21 Matthew Huff ran 5 yards for a touchdown with 2:37 remaining in the game Friday night to give Greer the lead, then the Jacket defense made a couple of late stops and Greer came from 14 points behind to win 24-21 at W.L. Varner Stadium in Woodruff. Huff's scoring run was set up by a Quay White 34 yard run to the 5 yard line. The Greer offensive line blew open three huge holes on the 5 play drive and when Andres Toro made the extra point, the Jackets had taken the lead in a game when so many things seemed to go against them. Greer stopped the Wolverines on four plays, with Quack Cohen pressuring Woodruff QB Keenan Halloran and Ethan Alexander batting the pass away. But after running off most of the time, Woodruff got 3 more plays in before Alexander got a tipped interception to end it with 4 seconds to go. Greer has now won three straight to improve to 3-2 on the season, while Woodruff is also at 3-2, Woodruff scored on a 70 yard Halloran run on the Wolverine's 1st play from scrimmage. They added a TD late in the quarter on a 45 yard pass from Halloran to Duke Furguson and it was 14-0. The Jackets got on the board with 8:07 remaining in the 1st half on a short run by White, then got a safety a couple minutes later when an errant snap on a Woodruff punt went out of the end zone, making it 14-9. Greer apparantley took the lead moments later on a 45 yard TD run by White, but a pair of major penalties ended the half with Greer trailing. But on the opening drive of the 2nd half, Greer took their 1st lead of the game when they would drive it for a touchdown. On 4th and short, Matthew Huff got his 1st TD of the game with a 27 yard run. The offensive front made such a huge hole Huff was never touched. Greer would go for two and once again it was Huff taking it in for a 17-14 lead, Woodruff regained the lead on a controversial play after the Greer defense got two sacks and with Woodruff punting from inside their 20, the snap was over the punter's head. After picking it up at the 5 he broke free from a tackle then ran several yards, then spotted a receiver Dymetric Ray and threw it downfield. Ray then weaved through the the Greer special teams unit for an improbable 75 yard scoring play. The extra point put Woodruff back ahead 21-17. After several minutes of discussion on whether men were downfield, etc, the play was upheld, setting up the late game heroics for the Jackets. The Sims & Karr Financial Solutions Players of the Game for Greer were Travagia Ware on defense and Matthew Huff on offense. Huff had three carries on the evening and scored 14 points, on two TDs and a 2 point conversion. Also on the night, Quay White followed up his 345 yard game against Daniel with 172 yards on 26 carries. Greer will be off next Friday night with an open date, then resume play on September 30 against Travelers Rest for the annual Homecoming game and the start of region play. Stay tuned to the Yellow Jacket Sports Network over the next 2 weeks with scores and info about the Greer Yellow Jackets on Twitter @YJSN1 and Facebook at Yellow Jacket Sports Network. Congratulations to the Jackets on their 3rd straight win and 2nd big comeback in as many weeks. GO JACKETS! Quay leads the way over Daniel, 42-28
The Greer Yellow Jackets put together their best game of the season thus far tonight in a thrilling 42-28 victory ove the Daniel Lions. Running back Quay White had one of the best rushing games ever for Greer as he rushed for 345 yards and 5 touchdowns. Adding in his kick returns, the junior totalled a staggering 517 of all-purpose yards on the evening, which included a 95 yard kickoff return in the 4th quarter that tied the score at 28 just after Daniel had taken a 7 point lead. With the score now tied, the Greer defense forced a 3 and out and the Jackets got the ball with 4:01 to play at ther own 39. The plan probably was to methodically drive the ball down the field and score to end it. But two White runs gained 38 yards, then QB Trey Houston ran 23 yards for the :51 second TD drive with the last 5 yards Houston taking a couple Daniel defenders for a ride. Andres Toro's extra point gave Greer a 35-28 lead. After another suffocating posession by the Jacket D forced a Lion punt, Greer was trying to run clock and make Daniel burn timeouts, but on 3rd an 7 from their own 42 it was White once again breaking a long 55 yard run and icing the game with 34 seconds to play. In all, White's TDs were from 42, 80, 70, 95, and 55 yards. His efforts earned him the Sims and Karr Financial Solutions Offensive Player of the Game. Not to be overshadowed, the Greer defense was outstanding once again tonight getting double digit sacks for a 2nd consecutive week. Leading that charge was Nijaylin "Nuk" Mills with seven sacks, following up last week whan he had six. Mills was named Defensive MVP for the 2nd straight game. Next week the Jackets travel to Woodruff to face another traditional football power, in another football football loving hometown. We hope you will make the short drive down Highway 101 and follow the Jackets, who could surely use your support on the road. The Yellow Jacket Sports Network will be there to bring it to you. Follow us on Twitter @YJSN1 and Facebook, Yellow Jacket Sports Network all week long. Congrats to the Greer Yellow Jackets for their exciting win over Daniel. GO JACKETS!! Greer defense stifled Clinton in 21-7 victory... Some old timer from Clinton football past rolled over tonight. In a program known for a punishing rushing attack and a "three yards and a cloud of dust" scheme that totally wore down your defense to the point it became five yards and then seven...the Greer Yellow Jacket defense held the Red Devis to not 83 yards rushing, but NEGATIVE 83 yards rushing. It's truly almost an unbelievable stat given the history of not just the Clinton program, but the rivalry between Greer and the Red Devils. But that's exactly what happened tonight at Dooley Field in Greer's 21-7 victory, their first of the season. It was a hard fought game throughout, but in the beginning it had the look of a runaway. After a quick 3 and out by the Greer defense, the Jackets started at the Clinton 42 and just 4 plays in, Quay White ran it in for a 9 yard TD run and when Andres Toro booted the extra point it was 7-0 just over 3 minutes into the game. Another quick stop and another crisp 40 yard drive, White got a 2 yard TD run and it was 14-0 and Dooley Field was alive. A posession later from the Red Devil 48 a quick pass out to Braxton Collins resulted in a 48 yard scoring play. But as the extra point teams were running out on the field, the side judge on the far side ruled that Collins had somehow stepped out of bounds at the 1 yard line. On the next play it appeared that QB Trey Houston extended the ball into the end zone, but the officials ruled a fumble and Clinton recovered. That play seemed to be a gut punch for the Jackets that would take well into the game to recover. In fact after a couple penalties, both as the defense had put Clinton in position to punt, moved the Red Devils out near midfield where they would have to punt. But they flipped the field and with Greer starting from their own 5 yard line, Twan Roberson picked off a quick pass from Houston and had just a couple steps into the end zone with 2:34 to go in the first half. The 2nd half saw Greer in great field position most of the half, while the Greer defense would continue their dominance. Clinton did convert a long pass to the Jacket 18 yard line late in the 3rd, but a holding penalty moved it back behind the 50. Then with just 2:36 to go in the game, Houston found Alex Syphert on a post route down the left sideline for a 27 yard tourchdown that would put the game away. Toro's 3rd PAT made the final Greer 21 Clinton 7. The Sims and Karr Financial Solutions Players of the Game were Syphert on offense (6 catches 112 yards and a TD) and Nuk Mills on defense. Mills had six sacks on the night. Coach Will Young told Steven Gay on the Yellow Jacket Sports Network "First of all we needed a win and we got it. i'm obviously happy about that. Our defense was unbelievable. They were really, really good. They played tonight like they practiced this week. They are the reason we won the game tonight. It certainly wasn't because of the way our offense executed. We made so many dumb mistakes and we had four turnovers. We can't have four turnovers and win unless our defense saves us and tonight they did." Next week the Jackets host the Daniel Lions at Dooley Field. It's also Hall of Fame Night as seven new members will be inducted into the Greer High Athletic Hall of Fame. Hopefully we'll see you at Dooley Field on Friday night. And remember to follow the Yellow Jacket Sports Network on Facebook "Yellow Jacket Sports Network" and on Twitter, Instagram, and Periscope @YJSN1. Go Jackets!
Turnovers and miscues leads to Byrnes victory.... Sometimes the stats just don't tell the story. Despite Greer outgaining Byrnes 262-225 in total offense, the Rebels came up big where it counts, on the scoreboard in taking a 45-7 win over the Jackets. In the first meeting between the two schools since 2009 Greer was moving the ball nicely on their first possession, but the Rebels punched the ball loose and quickly converted it to 7 points. The score remained 7-0 midway through the 2nd quarter before Byrnes got two TDs within just over a minute set up by getting the ball with a short field. Leading 24-0 at halftime, the Rebels put the game away with three 3rd quarter scores, the last two being by their defense. Greer never quit, advancing the ball to the Byrnes 10 yard line, and later getting a 20 yard TD pass from sophomore QB Trey Houston to junior WR Nate Jefferson with just 8 seconds to go in the game. Greer will return home next Friday night to face the Clinton Red Devils. We hope everyone will stay behind the team and welcome home the Jackets with a big crowd. Stay tuned this week on Twitter @YJSN1 for news and info about the Greer Yellow Jackets! Westside takes season opener over Yellow Jackets, 38-10 The Greer Yellow Jackets home opener against Westside went just about as well as could be hoped for through the first 23 minutes of the 1st half. With the scored tied 10-10 and Greer at the Ram six yard line & facing 4th and about a yard and a half, the Jackets couldn't pick up the 1st down. Then they saw Westside pick up 40 yards in 3 plays, but after a couple of good stops, the Rams had one more play from the Greer 42. A short pass near the Greer sideline was complete, but receiver Traye Carson was quickly surrounded. But a sidestep and a cutback suddendly freed him on his way to a half-ending TD to give the visitors the 17-10 lead that only moments earlier that Greer was poised to take. From there the Rams added three 2nd half TDs and the Jackets couldn't finish off any more drives & Westside took a 38-10 season opening win at Dooley Field. Greer scored on the first drive of the night when freshman Jakyre Kerns returned the opening kickoff to the Westside 46. And five plays later sophomore running back Dre Williams burst through on 4th and 1 for a 27 yard touchdown run. The extra point by Andres Torro made it 7-0 Greer. The two teams exchanged TDs and field goals and were tied at 10 going into the final minute of the half. 2016 Varsity Football Schedule All games start at 7:30 PM
